Taekwondo

Last week I decided that I needed to do something about the boredom I've been experiencing. It's been a little too wet for me to ride my mountain bike, and there isn't snow for skiing yet, so I need something else to do. So I decided to learn Taekwondo!

So, at 35 years old and about 40 pounds over weight, I put on a white Taekwondo outfit, tied my white belt and went to a beginner class. I was stepping WAY out of my comfort zone.

Within minutes, I was sweating, yelling numbers in Korean (well, others were counting in Korean and I was kind-of just saying gibberish that I thought sounded close). kicking and blocking. Our instructor, Master Chang, said something very interesting during class. He said that if we were by ourselves out in the middle of the street doing this, we would look crazy, but here in class with everyone else, we are normal.

So, I let myself feel as though taking Taekwondo was totally normal for me and had a great time! I can't wait for the next class. If all goes well, in three months I'll move up to a yellow stripped belt, and three months later a yellow belt.

It's funny how people react when you tell them you're trying something new. My mom acted like I lost my mind (why would I even want to try that), my friend at work laughed and said it was so me ("you're always trying new things that would scare me"), my husband thinks it's another phase that I will be done with shortly ("you're always trying something new and it never lasts"). But it doesn't really matter what everyone else thinks. I've been bored, and this is a great way to bust out of my boredom! And who know? Maybe I'll get my black belt one day.

  3. I love how you're trying new things and finding new ways to living up your life :) It's glad to know that depression is not as self limiting as others perceive it to be. Your activities are such great coping skills and not to mention fun!

  4. I ran across your blog via Google+ Taekwondo channel, and I just wanted to wish you all the best in your training! I hope you get out of it as many great things as I have - 25 years later I'm still kicking and punching.

This can be a life-changer for you. Not only because of exercise easing depression, but because Taekwondo can give you a whole new perspective on life. Even the lessons you learn today will be the foundation that builds a whole new way of thinking that gives you the ability to succeed regardless of how bad things look or feel.

Good luck with Taekwondo. I'm available if you have any questions.

  5. Good for you! It's great that you've stepped out to try something new. I tried Karate a few years ago. I really enjoyed it. Very relaxing indeed.

  7. The martial arts are an affirmation of life. By forging a new kind of power into your hands and feet, you become committed to yourself and your loved ones. And to life itself. It is true wisdom.

I'll be encouraging you along the way.

  12. Yep exercise is a fantastic way to beat depression. When I was initially diagnosed, my GP recommended that I start to exercise more. I did ignore him as I just didn't have time for anything like that.

I eventually took his advice and decided to go for an afternoon run. I've never looked back and can highly recommend exercise as THE way to battle depression.

  13. Exercise ALWAYS makes me feel better, strong, energized...'normal'. It's hard to overcome the boredom, depression, blues, whatever...to go out the front door though. HOWEVER, I'm doing it. Any walk in the sun is wonderful. Just walking is leading me to the gym. And I like that and will do it again.

  14. Love it! Being bored definitely does not help my depression, so I'm starting a book club with a few friends. I'm also trying to start cooking again and maybe making homemade lotions & bath products like I used to. Good luck with your Taekwondo lessons!! Maybe I should find a way to starting exercising...
